Is Network Marketing or MLM a Scam?

Blow The “Scam” Objection Out Of The Water

I keep getting the objection, “Network Marketing is a scam because only a few people at the top who get in at the beginning are making most of the money off the people who come in later.” How do I handle this objection? I don’t think I’m very good at answering this because when I look at my company – that’s exactly what I see. Help!

This is a great question, here is the way I handle this objection.

First, every time you handle an objection you must follow the Objection Handling Remedy as outlined in Professional Inviter.

  1. Listen completely through the question/objection.
  2. Confirm understanding.
  3. Make the question or objection valid to the prospect.
  4. Handle or facilitate handling Questions and/or Objections.
  5. Complete the handling and return to the previous step of the Inviting Formula.

In step #4 of the Objection Handling Remedy is where you handle or facilitate handling the objection. It’s best to handle the objection by comparing it to something the person knows. Engage the prospect to contribute to the conversation as much as possible – remember: If you say it, it can be argued, if the prospect says it, IT MUST BE TRUE.

If I don’t know enough about the person, I’ll explain the “all the money is made at the top” objection compared to the stock market and the real estate market – but will make sure I explain everything in detail just in case they don’t know about either industry. Here’s my explanation:

Let’s say you bought a stock for $1.00 ten years ago. Today it’s worth $20. Are you making more money because you got in at the beginning? Yes you are. Every person who buys the stock after you is driving the share price up; this is actually THE ONLY WAY YOU MAKE A PROFIT.

When you do sell your shares of stock – who are you selling them to? You’re selling them to someone who is going to pay more for it than you paid. You got in early and are making money off the people who come into the “scheme” later.

Let’s say you bought a beachfront house 20 years ago for $100,000 and that it’s worth $5,000,000 today. Are you making more money because you got in at the beginning? Yes you are. Every person who bought real estate in that
area after you did drove up the cost of your property.

When you sell your real estate, who do you sell it to? Someone who comes into the “scheme” later. So the profit you make is from people who come in later.

The truth is – in real estate and the stock market people who get in earlier do make more money because they got in at the beginning (if the stock and real estate market go up of course).

Also true is – in network marketing people who get in earlier can (notice the difference between “can” and “do” from previous paragraph) make more money.

There are many people who come into network marketing who make more money than the people above them. This is the case in my downline. There are 3 people in my downline who make more money than me.

So, to directly answer your question – every business in the world operates as this objection states…except network marketing! For an investment to be an investment, requires that someone has to come along later and pay more for it; otherwise it’s not an investment.

When a person buys a pair of shoes, they’re buying them from someone who got in earlier – therefore making the people who own the shoe company rich!

A person who buys a painting is buying it from someone who bought the painting earlier – therefore making them rich!

When you go to work for someone, you’re going to work for someone who got in earlier and they’re getting rich off of you!

Isn’t it odd that the entire business world operates under the principle of getting in early and making money off the people who come in later – yet the network marketing industry is often shunned for it! Yet, network marketing can point to thousands of people who make more money than the people who brought them into the business.

Network marketing…when done right and ethically is the fairest business on the planet – build your business with enthusiasm!!

Much respect,

Tim Sales

Family & Friends

Why You Should Never Force Your Downline To Contact Friends And Family

Family & Friends

Family & Friends

We all know how powerful feelings can be. They can propel us forward in achieving MLM success or they can hold us back. In either case they shouldn’t be taken lightly. So, when someone says to you “I wouldn’t want to make money off of my friends”, there may be a strong reason behind those feelings and it can take patience and excellent communication skills to get the person to tell you exactly why.

I have heard and seen this objection come across in two different ways.

The first scenario is when a person has already joined the business and you ask them to write a list or something like that and they say “I don’t want to contact my friends.” I’ve also seen it come up on prospecting, and that scenario is, “Is this one of those things where I have to call my friends?”

Often times I’ve had it where a person is truly concerned and when you drill down (carefully) and find out what their main concern is, you discover that the person doesn’t want to feel as though that they are bothering or pestering their friends and family.  That’s what they are concerned about, that’s what they’re worried about, that’s what their resisting.

Perhaps they have been forced into that in some other network marketing business before or someone has been like that to them and made them feel extremely uncomfortable.

When faced with these scenarios, there is only one way you can help your MLM prospect and that is to put yourself in their shoes. Feel what they’re feeling because only then can you actually help your prospect to be able to identify exactly the feeling that makes them raise the objection.

One critical communication skill needed here is to use the right amount of assertiveness. The right amount of assertiveness with the prospect means you’re never forcing them.  You may lead them gently, but you’re absolutely never forcing them. All too often I have heard tales of network marketing uplines insisting their people contact friends and family (the warm market) first.

This is a big mistake. Encourage yes by all means once you have given your people a renewed confidence but never force them to do this when downline building.

Take time and let the prospect feel you are not rushing them, that you are empathetic to their situation but also assuring them that there are ways you can help them.

For someone to give you this objection they would’ve had to have something occur or had someone tell them something.  You need to find out what happened, otherwise you could be walking right into a very difficult situation, but most important is that something is concerning your prospect about the industry.  Make no mistake about it, this is an MLM objection, so this to you should indicate they have doubts about the industry, so that’s the reason that you want to answer it by asking open questions.

So, for you to be able to help your prospect you need to know everything you can.  This way you can think on the same level they’re thinking on, so obviously your prospect has this strong thought going on in their head and you don’t know what it is.  They throw out this statement, “I wouldn’t want to make money of my friends.”   You need to try to figure out what their thinking about and don’t resist anything that they say to you.  If they want to get all dramatic and go into details, let them.

Just like in the MLM objection itself, let them say whatever it is they want to say because this is going to be very valuable to you.  Let me give you an example:

One lady said to me “I’m not going to have to call any of my friends, right?”  And my immediate reply was, “No, not if you don’t want to.”  So, really think that through just for a second.  Do you notice that I did not resist her? Then I asked, “What brought that up?”  And she had replied that, “Well, my husband said that I could do
the business as long as I didn’t contact any of our friends.”

Now that could have been the end of it, but then I realized that it perhaps it isn’t her issue, it’s his, and so I asked, “Well, do you know why he feels this way?”  And she said, “Well, he was in multi level marketing a long time ago and one of his friends still won’t talk to him to this day because of it.”

Can you see what kind of mess I would have gotten myself into had I had tried to force her to work the warm market?  It’s likely she would have gone home and told him and then he would have probably prohibited her from doing the business.  That’s the reason that I put so much emphasis on this concept of make sure that you find out what happened.  No. 1 is don’t resist and No. 2 is find out what happened and move on.

Brilliant Compensation by Tim Sales Very Powerful Tools for MLM

brilliant-compensation-tim-sales-cdHave you ever heard of the 80/20 rule? You probably have… it’s a much-talked-about concept in business that 80% of your sales come from 20% of your salespeople.

…but have you heard of the 95/5 rule?

Often in sales organizations, the Top 5% performers outsell and make as much money as the other 95% combined.

So that begs the question…

QUESTION: What’s the easiest way to become a Top 5% Performer in Network Marketing?
ANSWER: Recruit a Top 5% performer from a different industry!

…Easy for You to Say, Tim!

Now I realize you may be saying to yourself. “Yeah, right!”

If you’re a person making $40,000 a year, with a regular day job, and you’re just getting started with Network Marketing… and you’re barely making a dime…

…then how the heck are you supposed to get up the nerve to approach a successful businessperson / professional with your opportunity?

I mean, people who are Top 5% performers in any industry typically make a lot of money already, they’re very busy, and can be intimidating to approach. Right?

To answer this dilemma, I thought it would be helpful for you to read a comment I received recently from a Successful Networker who herself was a Top 5% performer in the corporate world. Here are her comments about how she recruits other successful people. My comments follow.

***NIECIE’S COMMENTS***

“The “Brilliant Compensation” presentation has really helped my network marketing business. I recently resigned from a six-figure income position with a Fortune 50 company. I am a professional. All of my contacts are professionals.

“Brilliant Compensation” helps to bring credibility to the industry. I’m not the “hype” type. I’m more into education and knowledge. Since I come from executive management in Corporate America, I tend to present to people like me!

Brilliant Compensation explains the business model in Corporate America jargon. It explains the business. People understand these words. It also immediately dispels the pyramid myth and the ‘where does the money come from question’. One of the biggest benefits for me too is that it allows me to cross the racial barrier. There are white professional males in the presentation. Since I am an African American female, it allows a diverse group of people the ability to “hear” me.” Thanks, Niecie

***MY RESPONSE***

Niecie’s comments remind me that one of the biggest rules to remember when approaching successful people is this – it’s not about YOU. You are just the messenger.

Any Top 5% Performer has gotten to where they are by educating themselves, and more importantly – working hard to implement what they’ve learned in their industry.

So, when looking at your opportunity, any top performer will not be looking at you…they will be considering the merits of what you’re offering. They will want to make an educated business decision based on facts, not hype.

Now, it’s true, among businesspeople and professionals; there are still a lot of negative pre-conceived notions about Network Marketing. And that’s exactly why I created the Brilliant Compensation DVD.

Brilliant Compensation poses a completely logical, non-hyped explanation of the networking business model. To add credibility and very convincing content, the DVD also contains an interview with Dr. Charles W. King, who is the Professor of Marketing at the University of Illinois in Chicago, who also holds a Ph.D. in business from Harvard University.

Obviously, professionals are impressed with Dr. King’s Harvard credentials, and when they hear his personal journey during the interview from skeptic to believer…and the years of non-biased due diligence he put into researching the industry…it makes a huge impression.

From now until November 30, I’m offering the lowest price I’ve EVER offered on this incredible objection-crushing tool – only $5.99 per DVD when you buy in packages of 8.

You can use this presentation with both English and Spanish speakers as the DVD now has both versions on one disc.

Get the special offer here.

Here’s another comment that I received recently that can shed some more light on how to recruit top performers:

***SHERI’S COMMENTS***

“I consider myself one of the most hardened people in the world, totally impervious to selling statements. Why? Because I write ads for a living, and so can see through almost any promotion. Well, I have to say this: your “Brilliant” film got my attention. I watched almost the WHOLE thing, and I NEVER do that (unless it’s research for client). These people let you know their credentials (Harvard? Hmmm…must know something here). They are clear, and they gave one of the best and most succinct presentations of well-known marketing principles I have ever heard. – Sheri”

***MY RESPONSE***

Sheri is like most professionals and businesspeople. They get ‘pitched’ all the time, and after a while, they get a bit ‘jaded’.

You may have heard that people “buy from their emotions and justify their purchase with logic”. To a certain degree, that’s true. But emotions are less a factor when recruiting a professional.

Think about it.

In a typical M.L.M presentation, there’s a lot of focus on “make big money…work from h.ome…only 10 hours a week… incredible lifestyle…etc. etc”. These are tried-and-true emotional phrases that appeal to the average person.

However, while professionals are certainly not immune to emotional appeals, they are more likely to analyze and ask the “tough” questions about an opportunity.

Why? Because they know the correct questions to ask. They are going to question the legitimacy of a company, the product, the timing of product in the market, and especially the legitimacy of the marketing plan.

This is where the Brilliant Compensation DVD comes in perfectly. It speaks at the professional level and is completely devoid of hyped-up pitches. The path of logic doesn’t insult their intelligence – in fact, it challenges it.

You’ll be surprised at how even the most analytical business minds will NOT be able to refute the logic of the presentation. After watching it, their minds will be open and ready to see your opportunity with a newfound, unbiased understanding of the Network Marketing Industry.

Put the profound effect of Brilliant Compensation to work for you today. From now until November 30, I’m offering the lowest price I’ve EVER offered on this incredible objection-crushing tool – only $5.99 per DVD when you buy in packages of 8.

You’ll now get both the English and Spanish versions on one disc.

Common Objections Of Why People Don’t Change For The Better

The following are 13 of the most common objections and information to help you handle these objections. Remember that confronting objections with information can be dangerous.

As most objections are expressed emotions you must take care to inject information into the process only when this is appropriate. Information will not solve any objection, but only help your prospect solve their dilemma.
With each objection, probe them for more information and offer the benefits of your business. Remember, you are trying to offer a solution and add value to someone’s life, not sell your business.

13 Most Common Objections

1. I Don’t Have the Time

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • Is time really the issue or whether the current time is a bad time for you to present the opportunity?
  • How does the prospect feel about being time-strapped?
  • What is taking up the prospects time now and are there areas where they could find time?
  • What is the prospect’s desire to gain control over their time?
  • Does the prospect understands what is actually required to do the business?
  • Does the prospect appreciate what it would be like to have the time?
2. I Don’t Have The Money

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • What is what they’re doing now not working?
  • Have they provided for future needs – college for kids and retirement?
  • How would they feel to never have to say this again?
  • What are they doing now to correct the situation?
  • Are they ready to do something about not having any money?
3. This Is A Pyramid

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • What is their perception of a pyramid?
  • Would they appreciate you would not involve others in an illegal scheme?
4. I Can’t Sell

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • What is their past experience with sales?
  • What is it about sales that scares them?
  • What do they believe is involved in network marketing?
  • That they understand that sharing, and not traditional sales, is the core of your business
5. My Friend Lost Money in Network Marketing

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • That they appreciate that different people succeed in different endeavors because we are all…different
  • What was the type of opportunity this friend was involved in?
  • Why their friend was unsuccessful
  • Do they predict their success on how successful their friend was?
  • Do they understand that there is a right way and a wrong way to do business?
6. I’m Not The Network Marketing Type

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • What do they believe the network marketing type is?
  • Were they involved in network marketing before and if so, with whom?
  • Do they understand network marketing?
  • Do they appreciate how network marketing has evolved over the years?
  • Do they know the caliber of individuals involved in your business?
7. I’ve Tried Network Marketing and it Didn’t Work

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • What was their prior network marketing experience?
  • Why their prior experience would not work for them?
  • What do they see as the elements necessary for them to succeed?
  • How were their prior employment experiences right or wrong for them but had the opposite effect on others?
8. I Don’t Know How To Start A Business

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • Have they started a business in the past?
  • Were they alone in starting a business?
  • What do they see as difficult in starting a new business?
  • Do they appreciate the rewards in owning a business?
9. I Don’t Know Anybody

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • Would they appreciate how nice it would be to have a network of friends to call upon?
  • What relationships they actually have, such as professionals who serve them and family members seeking opportunity?
  • That your business can get started by sharing the product/service and finding just a few people to do the same (the # will depend on your compensation plan)
  • They can appreciate how many friends you have made with this business.
10. I Can Get It Cheaper/Too Much Competition

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • How they select their own products?
  • What makes them think there is too much competition?
  • Do they appreciate the difference between price and value?
  • Could they well be comparing apples to oranges?
11. My Partner Doesn’t Want Me To Do This?

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • Do they appreciate that a home based business allows them to focus on family first?
  • What was their network marketing experience in the past?
  • What are the partner’s objections?
  • Who is the decision maker in the family?
  • Whether the spouse should attend the presentation?
12. I Already Have A Good Job

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • Does their job provide an income after they have left?

  • That this opportunity need not threaten their current employment
  • That job security is no longer assured after what’s already happened in this financial crisis
13. I Don’t Want To Bother My Friends & Family

Make sure you probe to determine:

  • That they already make recommendations to their friends daily – a good movie, a good restaurant, etc
  • Are their friends already established and secure in their income and retirement?
  • That this opportunity can help their friends achieve their goals.
